Pipa is a Nature Preservation Zone. There is great concern for the protection and preservation of the “Mata Atlantica”, a Brazilian vegetable formation, a continuation of the Amazon jungle that is one of the major biodiversities on the planet. Currently, the Mata Atlantica is one of the most threatened tropical jungles, and Pipa is committed to preserving it at all costs.
The Mata Atlantica follows the coastal area of the country from Rio Grande do Sul to Rio Grande do Norte (the median and northeast regions). At the moment it is extremely reduced in size. There is only 7% of the Mata Atlantica left. It is one of the most threatened tropical jungles in the world, especially due to the real estate projects underway. On the other hand, Pipa is one of the few places where the Mata Atlantica is protected and preserved. A good example of this is Pipa’s Ecological Sanctuary. It’s the major Atlantic forest reserve in the region. It has tracks for walking, watch points to the beaches and even a museum. This is a very special and ideal place to get in contact with nature. This area is classified as “Area de Protección Ambiental” (APA) under the Instituto Brasilero de Medio Ambiente de Rió Grande do Norte (IDEMA – RN). The municipality has also been chosen to participate in a study Project called Proyecto Orla. In 1998, the community organized itself and funded the NEP (Nucleo Ecologico de Pipa) with the aim of spreading. environmental information.
